SolidWorks multi-entity design case: bridging

using one entity to connect multiple discontinuous entities to form a single entity, which is also a common design method in multi-entity environment. Here is an example of bridging. Readers will further understand the advantages of modeling with bridging design method. In this example, the reader will also learn to draw polygons using the polygon tool

open the part

open the "wrench.Sldprt" part, as shown in Figure 1. Two features have been established in this part. Because features cannot be merged automatically, a multi-body part is formed

draw a sketch

select the bottom of the "stretch 1" cylinder as the sketch plane, and draw the sketch shown in Figure 2. Note that the two slashes are tangent to the circle

create extrusion

create extrusion boss feature. By default, the [merge results] check box is selected. Because entities need to be merged here, the default check box of [consolidation result] is selected

separate entities

expand the "entities" folder, and the created extrusion feature automatically merges the first two discontinuous entities to form a single entity

draw polygons

in SolidWorks, you can use the "polygon" tool to draw regular polygons, such as squares, regular hexagons, etc. As shown in Figure 3, set the number of edges for drawing polygons and the way of polygons relative to the construction line circle in PropertyManager

select the [tool] | [sketch drawing entity] | [polygon] command in the drop-down menu, or click the [polygon] button in the "sketch" toolbar, as shown in Figure 4, set the number of sides of the polygon to 4, and draw a square from the center of the cylindrical boss
